Before you start, yes, they had MUCH better writing and far more interesting characters. Just an observation...SuperWifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02856384425069616224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18829500.post-87163112812024443482007-02-14T16:29:00.000-05:002007-02-14T16:29:00.000-05:00Okay, okay, there's some issues here, but is that ...Okay, okay, there's some issues here, but is that any reason to get all up on American Idol? Is it? I don't think so. They haven't done shit to you.

Now, that said, it occurred to me (and likely already has to everyone else), that with Claire's father's name being so carefully avoided all the time, could he be Linderman? That basement op room at his paper distributor business easily could be "governmental" with little to no imagination, too.SuperWifehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02856384425069616224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18829500.post-50181106643588030552007-02-14T13:54:00.000-05:002007-02-14T13:54:00.000-05:00Jeff,Thanks for the compliment. As to how far down the road I've gone, I admit, I'm jaded by seeing this exact same dynamic played out over and over again in every fantasy TV show I like. In many ways, watching all the plot inconsistencies and errors in internal plausibility in HEROES is very similar to undergoing the same process over 7 seasons of BUFFY. When things start to go wrong, I have learned to ascribe it to bad writing, rather than design... and I haven't been disappointed yet.

Still, to see a way the writers could feasibly explain everything to date in Heroes (well, other than maybe Claire somehow dragging a full grown fireman out of an inferno), see my second addendum to the article, above.Doc Nebulahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13052810933464744998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18829500.post-21627654177165215122007-02-14T10:36:00.000-05:002007-02-14T10:36:00.000-05:00Good points here, but you seem to have gone farthe...Good points here, but you seem to have gone farther down the road to concluding the writers don't have a clue than I have so far. I am still holding out hope. It helps that I also watch Lost, which is so wheels-off now that Heroes looks like a tightly engineered machine by comparison. If Heroes still has us waiting for the freaking explosion two seasons from now, with an almost entirely new cast of characters on the scene, then it will still only be half as bad as Lost in terms of (1) providing no resolution to any issue of significance, and (2) flailing about creating set-ups and plot lines that the writers do not have a snowball's chance of ever bringing together in any plausible way.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18829500.post-76316312898031820172007-02-13T10:37:00.000-05:002007-02-13T10:37:00.000-05:00Jim,Thank you for that diagnosis, Doctor. Don't hold back; say what you REALLY think.

You might also want to take a few moments to comment on the actual substance of the actual post. Not that I mind people who just drive by to insult me, but, y'know, I get a lot of that elsewhere on the 'net. Here I try to provide a little intelligent conversation, albeit on very trivial, geeky subjects, and I look for the same in response.

Still, I'm sorry my self pity has so alienated you, and if it's bothering you so much, you absolutely have my full permission to get up out of your recliner, walk over to your fridge, and help yourself to a tall cool glass of shut the fuck up.

Put it on my tab.Doc Nebulahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13052810933464744998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18829500.post-33364553671797821912007-02-13T10:30:00.000-05:002007-02-13T10:30:00.000-05:00You spend too much time pitying yourself for being...You spend too much time pitying yourself for being ignored or disagreed with. Read it when you get a chance.

Scott,

That's an excellent point, about the lack of narrative movement. I'd been aware of it, but I hadn't really articulated it to myself. But you're correct, it's very much as if they simply hadn't really planned on getting much past the first set of episodes, and now that they have, they have no real clue where they're going or how to get there.

Agnosticuss,

Yeah, I'd processed the "Hiro lost his confidence after he failed to save Charlie" thing, too. But it's still way too convenient, and the problem is, nobody writing this show ever bothers to explicate any of this stuff to us.

If it's a crisis of confidence, someone should tell us. (What the hell else is the Mohinder character there for, except to tell us stuff like this? A voiceover about "These powers can be very fickle. In many cases, if a person with these powers ceases to believe in these powers, the powers cease to manifest" would give us everything we need.

But the writers don't bother to explain stuff, mostly, I think, because they don't know where the plot is going, so they don't want to be locked into any one explanation in case a better idea comes up later.

Also, some necessary plot developments (like Peter deciding some shabby street thief can somehow teach him to control his powers) CANNOT be explained. So they just do it and move past it really fast and hope no one notices.

It tasks me, it does.Doc Nebulahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13052810933464744998noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18829500.post-70533498539720837672007-02-12T12:54:00.000-05:002007-02-12T12:54:00.000-05:00For a while, I thought Hiro might have viewed the ...For a while, I thought Hiro might have viewed the sword as an object of power -- something symbolic that shows he is a hero. I thought that maybe he lost his confidence after losing the waitress and was feeling powerless and literally needed a huge phallic object to feel manly again.

But now, I think the truth is that it's just shoddy writing. Like H said: when the plot requires him to do his thing, he'll be able to do it.

At first, I thought Nikki was the most interesting character -- with the most potential for conflict and heroism. But her plot is just sitting there doing nothing.

This show is in serious danger of losing a viewer.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-18829500.post-19531832907160283452007-02-12T09:52:00.000-05:002007-02-12T09:52:00.000-05:00The fact that all the heroes in HEROES are suppose...The fact that all the heroes in HEROES are supposed to have derived their powers from "evolution" has bothered me right from the start. I mean, exactly what kind of genetic mutation gives someone the god-like power to stop time?
The strength of the first half of the show was in its pacing - each show moved the plot forward very quickly, with new information being revealed in just about every episode. Every episode ended with a cliffhanger, which was resolved in the very next episode.
Now...there's no narrative momentum anymore. Basically since the show came back after the break, virtually NOTHING has happened. Hiro is wandering around looking for a sword (why does he even need a sword? He didn't for the first half of the show), and everyone else is just wandering around. It's very close to becoming boring.

Plus - too many new characters. I don't know about you, but I could have really done without the invisible dude and the fire-making bio-mom.
I could also do without Nikki.
The Nikki storyline is a bit of a puzzler - it isn't really going anywhere and I can't see how it ties in with the other plotline to stop Peter from exploding. It's the least interesting of all the subplots.

I've always seen Claire's dad as a villian, and I like the fact that he's not a mustache-twirling evil dude like Sylar, but lately, yeah, he's looking a bit too heroic.

If I didn't know better, I'd wonder if the writers literally didn't have enough material for a complete first season, and so they're sort of stalling for time. It's too bad, really - the first several episodes had a lot of promise.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
